In 1975, the Broward County Housing Authority received funding from the Department of Housing and Urban Development to administer a Section 8 program. The program provides rent subsidies in the form of housing assistance payments (HAPS) to private landlords on behalf of eligible families, senior citizens, and disabled or handicapped persons. The objective of the program is to provide affordable, decent and safe housing for eligible families while increasing a family's residential mobility and choice. Broward County Housing Authority offers a variety of Section 8 special programs to eligible households. Eligibility requirements vary for each program.
