BCHA has five volunteer commissioners appointed by the Governor to serve four year terms. One of the commissioners, designated a resident commissioner, is a recipient of either Section 8 or Public Housing Assistance.  The responsibilities of the board include developing policies of how to better serve our residents and reviewing the operations of the Authority.

Mrs. Sharon Day was elected Commission Chair on June 24, 2008 and was originally appointed to the Board by Governor Bush on April 21, 2005.  Mrs. Day is a Texas native who has been involved in many community service activities. She has a broad business background and an extensive understanding of Broward County.

 

Ms. Mercedes Núñez serves as the Commission Vice-Chairperson.  Ms. Núñez is a resident commissioner and represents all Public Housing and Section 8 residents.  She attended NYU Prep School, Hunter College and State University of NY at Binghamton.  Ms. Núñez has worked as a 911  communications operator for the Broward Sheriff's Office and has been involved with the Muscular Dystrophy Association since 1978. 

 

Mr. Joseph M. Cobo brings diversified experience in finance and management to the agency. He is the President and CEO of Florida Medical Management Consultants, Inc. a healthcare and financial consulting firm, which he founded in 1978. He is a graduate of Broward Community College and pursued further studies at Florida Atlantic University.  Mr. Cobo became a Certified Healthcare Business Consultant in 2001 and is President of the National Society of Certified Healthcare Business Consultants. He is also a Certified Management Consultant.

Mr. Cobo is very active in the community and is current Treasurer of the Broward Education Foundation and board member of Emergency Medical Services (EMS), appointed by Commissioner Diana Wasserman-Rubin. He formerly served on the board of the American Red Cross Broward Chapter and United Way of Broward. Mr. Cobo is involved in the Leadership Counsel of Take Stock in Children and is a Mentor to children in need. Mr. Cobo also serves on the Insurance Advisory Board of the City of Ft. Lauderdale, appointed by the Mayor.  He resides in Ft. Lauderdale. 

 

Mr. John E. Aurelius received his Bachelor's degree in Government with a specialty in Urban Administration from University of Miami and his law degree from University of Miami Law School. He has been a practicing attorney in Ft Lauderdale for over 40 years and has served in a variety of elected and appointed positions that include Ft Lauderdale City Commissioner from 1991 - 1999, six years on the Broward County Planning Council, a prior director of the Broward County Bar Association, Special Master for Broward County Value Adjustment Board, and is now Vice President of the Fort Lauderdale Fire and Safety Museum.

 

Mr. Juan A Selaya was appointed by Governor Crist in May of 2008 and is the newest member of our Board. Mr Selaya is the President, Broker-Owner of J.A.S. Properties in Hollywood, Florida. He is a long time South Florida resident with a history of involvement in his local community. Mr. Selaya is fully bi-lingual and has a significant track record of business and marketing to Spanish speaking populations in the US, the Caribbean, and all of South America. Mr. Selaya is a member of the Broward Health Community Advisory Board and the Bio-Ethics Committee of North Broward Hospital, a part of Broward Health. He is presently developing a non-profit organization to assist Florida residents to rent or purchase affordable housing.
