The combination of two distinct funding opportunities made new affordable housing a reality in the Tallman Pines neighborhood of Deerfield Beach.  The BCHA previously managed public housing at the Tallman Pines site.  After a successful relocation of residents, and using less than the full footprint of the site, it was possible to provide almost two times the number of housing opportunities by increasing the vertical density to three stories.  Seeking and responding to public input, elevators were added to the design - an uncommon feature in affordable buildings of three stories in Florida.  However, with the goal of serving families, the added cost created a welcome amenity.  Now residents easily move strollers, groceries and furniture from parking areas to their residence.  The community was recognized as the first LEED (silver) affordable housing community in Florida.  Following construction and occupancy of the multifamily community, sufficient property was retained to land-bank a portion for creation of future single family home ownership.
